California Sea Grant is working to leverage decades of state, local, and regional investment in coastal management and climate and sea-level rise adaptation in the Santa Barbara Littoral Cell, covering Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Through a critical partnership with the Beach Erosion Authority for Clean Oceans and Nourishment (BEACON), our work attempts to link the pathways from science to policy development and decision-making.
Percent cover of each plant species found in restoration and reference plots of Manzanita Canyon using the CNPS Vegetation Rapid Assessment/Releve. Data are from spring 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019; plot sizes were 100m2 (all 5X20 m rectangles except MU05-Restoration which was a 5.6 m diam circle).
We checked in on some of our restoration plots in Manzanita Canyon in April 2019—one year after our Prop 1 project with San Diego Canyonlands and Ocean Discovery Institute ended. The project aimed to increase the climate resilience of an urban canyon and community through combined restoration, stewardship and science efforts.
Coastal bluffs and cliffs in California are subject to undercutting, erosion, and catastrophic failure. Coastal communities and resources are also subject to elevated water levels, storm surge, flooding and erosion. The specific conditions and thresholds that lead to bluff collapse are not fully understood. Flooding is better understood but advances in forecasting and interconnectedness are needed.
California’s coastal communities face growing shoreline erosion and coastal flooding hazards, and these threats are expected to be exacerbated as sea levels rise.
California Sea Grant develops sea-level rise science education and training materials. These are tailored for the general public, coastal managers and planners, and educators across the State.
Our extension team are developing science education lessons, activities and field trips for informal and formal educators to expand engagement of diverse and underrepresented communities in STEM learning.

You may submit a proposal ONLY if you previously submitted a 2018 preliminary proposal to a Sea Grant Program (due in March 2018), and the proposal you submit must be based upon the pre-proposal submitted earlier.
California Sea Grant is now soliciting Qualification Requests and Full Proposal Requests for the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) and California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) 2019 Marine Protected Area (MPA) Monitoring Program. This MPA Monitoring Program 2019 Solicitation is administered by California Sea Grant in partnership jointly with CDFW and OPC.
