Cost-effective evaluation of Mid-Depth Rocky Reef Ecosystems in California: continued monitoring of the oldest MPAs in the CA network

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: Jennifer Caselle (UC Santa Barbara)

PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR: California Sea Grant

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT:

This project continues long-term mid-depth reef data collection using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUVs) in the oldest region of the California MPA network. This will provide critical data on habitat and environmental conditions of key fisheries and non-fisheries species, helping to guide adaptive management of the state’s Marine Protected Area network.

The Delta Stewardship Council’s Delta Science Program and California Sea Grant are pleased to announce six recipients of the 2025 Delta Science Fellowship. Each fellowship provides up to two years of support to pursue research that will advance the state of knowledge underlying high-priority science issues that affect the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) and its management.

Developing novel non-invasive environmental RNA (eRNA) tools for conservation of two endangered Bay-Delta fish species

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT

This project will develop novel non-invasive genomic tools to monitor two endangered fish species in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by detecting RNA molecules they naturally release into the water. Unlike traditional monitoring that requires catching fish, this innovative approach using environmental RNA could provide more precise information about where these rare fish are and how they're doing.
