(Update July 2, 2018) The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with California Sea Grant, recently completed an independent scientific evaluation of the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program. While decisions about the future direction of the program are ultimately up tothe OREHP Advisory Panel, the Department and the Legislature, the scientific evaluation team recommends a science-based and public participatory decision-making process.
The Department is interested in gathering input from interested stakeholders on value, participation, and benefits of the program, as well as input on the future direction of the program. Your feedback and input is requested before July 31, 2018, to help inform the future of OREHP. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has released the Evaluation Report for the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program (OREHP).
The program was established by the California Legislature in 1983 to conduct research into the restoration and enhancement of marine finfish species populations important to California for their sport and commercial fishing value, in particular white seabass.
In 2015, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife contracted California Sea Grant to coordinate the first formal, comprehensive review of the program’s progress toward achieving its goals and objectives. The report found that while the OREHP has significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of marine enhancement science, it has not substantially increased the abundance of legal-sized White Seabass. According to the report, the information generated by the program to date can be used as a learning experience for enhancement of wild populations, whether focusing on white seabass or other species.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will use this information along with public input to guide decisions regarding the future of the OREHP.
