Maxwell (Max) Talley

California Sea Grant Canine Outreach Specialist

Affiliation

University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Max employs a combination of olfactory field assessments and couch-time to better understand the canine dimensions of common environmental science issues.

Expertise

  • Non-discriminant cheese gobblingbig-eared dog staring into gopher hole
  • Discriminant scent adoption: nothing but guano and dead stuff
  • Small animal pursuit, in particular cats, squirrels, birds, lizards, gophers
  • Master of sit, roll-over and shake
  • Chomping and squeaking of toys
  • Grumpy vocal responses to human males, in particular, tall men with hats and beards

Research

Max's research seeks to answer pressing canine socio-environmental questions, including:

  • Pocket gophers in an age of climate change: Snacks or toys?
  • Does fish trophic level influence the stench of rotting meat and subsequent suitability for rolling in?
  • Does seabird trophic level influence the stench of guano and subsequent suitability for rolling in?
  • Lizards, lizards everywhere until they aren't: Unraveling the mystery of where lizards go once they dart under a shrub.
  • And the age old existential question...Who's a good boy?  (Preliminary results reveal that I am!)

Education and Outreach

Max's training includes time with Baja Dog Rescue and both home-schooling and paws-on training at California Sea Grant to learn the ways of proper doggy research etiquette. He is a naturally skilled outreach specialist having mastered the "sniff and lick" approach to assessing and connecting with both canine and human subjects alike.
