Winners of Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Announced
Four California graduates to head to the U.S. capital for yearlong assignments

NOAA Sea Grant has awarded four California Sea Grant nominees the prestigious Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship.
Named after one of Sea Grant’s founders, former NOAA Administrator John A. Knauss, the one-year paid fellowship provides the opportunity for exceptional graduate students to be paired with “hosts” in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area. Most fellowships begin in February.
The four fellowship recipients are:
Alyson Fleming: Alyson earned a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California, San Diego. She will complete her fellowship at the Office of Marine Conservation, part of the State Department’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.
Laura Henson: Laura graduated from the Monterey Institute of International Studies with a master’s degree in international environmental policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She will complete her fellowship at NOAA’s Office of International Affairs.
Alexis Jackson: Alexis earned a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She will complete her fellowship at the Highly Migratory Species Division, part of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service.
Emily Trentacoste: Emily earned a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California, San Diego. She will complete her fellowship at the Aquaculture Program Office, part of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service.
The four women join 45 other outstanding recent graduates from across the nation, nominated by other programs within the Sea Grant network.
