Many of us may be pretty clueless about what fishermen catch off our coast, the gear they use, or the species that are farmed.
To help educate the public, California Sea Grant has created four regional posters that highlight local, commercially caught and farmed marine seafood.
The posters are available free for download and printing at Discover California Fisheries.
Each poster includes a sampling of the more than 50 varieties of seafood caught and grown in four regions of California, along with information on their seasonality and the gear or methods used. The four regions are:
- North Coast (the Oregon border to Point Arena),
- Central Coast (Point Arena to Point Conception),
- Santa Barbara Channel (Point Conception to Point Dume), and
- South Coast (Point Dume to the Mexican border).
California Sea Grant Extension Specialists Carolynn Culver and Carrie Pomeroy developed the posters, using a design produced in collaboration with Ben Ciccati, Kim Selkoe and Heather Lahr.
