The United States is tied for the second largest consumer of seafood, yet we import 91% of the seafood that we eat.  About half of our seafood imports come from aquaculture, and this is likely to increase due to rising demand for seafood domestically and internationally.  The healthy and local food movements, environmental groups, and scientists from industry and academia are focusing increasing attention and resources on aquaculture's potential to be a domestic source of seafood.  The legal field, on the other hand, has not yet given much attention to aquaculture.  However, food and agricultural law is becoming more popular in the legal realm and aquaculture is a subcategory of those fields that, moving forward, will require independent analysis.

To move towards intelligently regulating aquaculture, applicants, lawyers, regulators, and decisionmakers must better understand the field and the regulatory framework.  Held at the UCLA School of Law, the California Aquaculture Law Symposium is an effort to begin the broader discussion about aquaculture law, starting in California with coastal and offshore aquaculture.
