Dear Friend and Supporter of Sea Grant:
As many of you are no-doubt aware, the President has recommended in his proposed FY2018 budget the complete elimination of the national Sea Grant program (as well as severe cuts to or elimination of other valuable science and environmental programs long-supported by the federal government).
Elimination of Sea Grant would cease our promotion of science-based solutions to pressing problems related to human interaction with the coast and coastal ecosystems, in key areas such as aquaculture, commercial and recreational fisheries, sea-level rise adaptation, harmful algal blooms, and coastal water quality. Elimination of Sea Grant would also stop our promotion of programs to get educated young scientists into the state, federal, non-for-profit and business workforces.
Sea Grant is a program that, nationwide, applies 95% of the federal funds allocated directly to addressing local needs, and the funds provided by the federal government are used, in California, to obtain twice-again as much funds to apply to helping address coastal problems. It therefore has tremendous impact as a “force multiplier.”
If you agree that Sea Grant is an important program to continue I would greatly appreciate your help in making sure this happens. You can help with a very modest effort. Please contact your two Senators and the Congressperson in the district in which you live, and urge that Sea Grant be continued and supported at a healthy level.
