2022 California Sea Grant State Fellow

Host Agency

California State Lands Commission

Max Liebergesell earned a mater's degree in marine ecology from San Diego State University in December 2021. His thesis research focused on the potential factors that may contribute to differential predation of the California sheephead on purple urchins within degraded urchin barrens and healthy kelp forests in hopes of gaining insight into the processes driving urchin barren persistence.

For his fellowship with the State Lands Commission, Max will help to integrate the best available science into policy decision with regards to projects such as offshore renewable energy, platform decommissioning, and aquaculture.
