In 1997, Rick Starr, other members of the scientific community, and a group of local teachers and marine resource managers expressed their concerns about the lack of ocean science education in central California public schools. In an effort to eleviate these concerns, a plan was developed to create a youth program which would fill this void and capitalize on the unique resources found around Monterey Bay. From this plan, Camp SEA Lab (an organization which fosters lifelong excitement, scientific understanding and stewardship regarding our coastal waters) was founded. To promote science, education and adventure for youth, as well as their families and teachers, Camp SEA Lab:
1) employs hands-on educational techniques
2) promotes ideas of ocean stewardship & conservation
3) emphasizes career development
4) utilizes innovative technology whenever possible
5) encourages a diverse community of participants
Through Camp SEA Lab programs, local youth have the opportunity to explore the many wonders of the marine environment and will, undoubtedly, gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse ecosystems that it supports!
