The results of a workshop on the taxonomy of Gracilaria, Eucheuma, Sargassum and the Gelidiales groups are described with extensive illustrations. An international group of scientists from the United States, Japan, Chile, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines attended the 1989 workshop held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California.
