Seafood Specialist Retiree Elected to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology

California Sea Grant Seafood Specialist retiree Pamela Tom has been elected as a Fellow to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST).

IAFoST elects new Fellows every two years, and among the 30 newly elected Fellows globally, Tom is one of five academics elected this year from the United States and the only West Coast representative. To be eligible for election as a Fellow, a person must be recognized as having established an outstanding reputation for scientific accomplishments and leadership in the area of food science and technology. Elected Fellows serve as independent persons to work and promote high standards of ethics and scientific endeavors. Tom and other new Fellows will be inducted during the 17th World Congress of Food Science and Technology (World Food Congress) August 17-21 in Montreal, Canada.

An alumna of University of California, Davis, Tom served as manager of California Sea Grant Extension’s Seafood Technology Program until her retirement in July 2013. Tom coordinated the program’s training workshops, assisted with research projects and wrote educational materials for consumers and industry. She was a pioneer in bridging internet communications among the seafood industry in over 75 countries through co-founding a global seafood safety discussion list, and Seafood NIC, one of the world’s first seafood technology network information centers, recognized worldwide in industry and government as a one-stop source of seafood information.
