Fellowship Summary

Coastal Management and Digital Coast Fellows work for two years with state coastal resource agencies and nonprofit organizations on projects proposed by the hosts and selected by NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management. In a mutually beneficial arrangement, six (6) will be placed with a state coastal program and three (3) will be placed with a Digital Coast partner. Information about 2018 State Projects can be found here.

This two-year opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement. The current salary is $34,000 per year. In the second year, a locality pay factor may be added to the salary, depending on the location of the fellowship. 

Eligibility: For the 2018 fellowship, any student completing a master’s or other advanced degree program in natural resource management or environment-related studies at an accredited U.S. university between January 1, 2017, and July 31, 2018, is eligible to apply for the Coastal Management and Digital Coast Fellowships. Students from a broad range of environmental programs are encouraged to apply. Students from non-U.S. institutions are not eligible.

The most important prerequisite is an interest in coastal issues.

Required Elements

• Resume or Curriculum Vitae (not to exceed two pages using 12 point font)
• Statement of the applicant's goals with emphasis on what the applicant expects from and can contribute to the fellowship experience (500 words or less).
• Unofficial copies of all undergraduate and graduate student transcripts.
• Two letters of recommendation, including one from the student's major professor (sent directly to CA Sea Grant). 

Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm PT, January 19, 2018, to the California Sea Grant Program. State Sea Grant programs may select and forward to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management up to four (4) finalists.

Timeline

1. Friday, January 19, 2018 - Applications due from candidates
2. January - February, 2018 - Interviews held by California Sea Grant
3. Friday, March 16, 2018 - Finalists selected by NOAA Office for Coastal Management 
4. April 23 - 27, 2018 - Matching workshop in Charleston, South Carolina 
5. August 2018 - Fellowship begins
