Serving as part of the California Sea Grant Science Integration Team, the  Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Program Coordinator works to identify, implement, and manage programs and services designed to increase participation of underrepresented groups in research, education and outreach activities supported by California Sea Grant.  Sea Grant is committed to building inclusive research, extension, communication and education programs that serve people with unique backgrounds, circumstances, needs, perspectives and ways of thinking.

The EDI Program Coordinator establishes, maintains and nurtures connections with California universities and colleges, especially Hispanic-serving institutions and those that have a track record of serving Black and Native/Indigenous students, to secure interest among potential fellowship candidates from underrepresented groups; solicits and reviews applications for the various fellowship programs administered by California Sea Grant; coordinates the selection of awardees of these fellowships; and co-organizes and co-leads the annual State Fellows matching workshop that pairs hosts with finalist candidates.

The EDI Program Coordinator develops applied research and outreach programs that support California Sea Grant strategic goals, EDI objectives, and address local, state and national needs. The incumbent engages with coastal managers, research scientists, and other stakeholders across California to determine research needs and priorities; and develops collaborations and obtains extramural funds to design and implement projects that increase participation of underserved and underrepresented groups in coastal and marine disciplines.

The position administers competitive marine science research and fellowship programs and advises the California Sea Grant Director on project-specific decisions, research directions, and the most current scientific developments in all subject areas covered by the program; and ensures that research supports the diversity of the communities that California Sea Grant seeks to serve and diverse institutions are aware of, have access to, and can participate in California Sea Grant's annual call for proposals.

The EDI Program Coordinator also coordinates the review of annual and final reports submitted by funded researchers, and helps to identify and follow up on noteworthy accomplishments and impacts to communicate to funding agency partners.  This component of the job involves interaction with funded scientists, California Sea Grant’s communications team and other extension specialists, and agency partners.
