California Sea Grant Seeks Fellowship Program Coordinator

California Sea Grant (CASG) is excited to announce a new position on our team that will be based at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla. The Fellowship Program Coordinator will administer competitive coastal and marine fellowship programs and advise the CASG Director on program-specific and application decisions, research and policy directions, and the latest developments in workforce development and training programs.

Reporting to the Director, the Fellowship Program Coordinator works collaboratively within the Science Integration Team and with program partners to develop, coordinate, implement, integrate and evaluate the workforce development and training programs and provides services to CASG applicants, fellows, alumni and mentors.

California Sea Grant’s workforce development program, including the fellowship programs, has the following goals:

  1. Encourage qualified undergraduate and (primarily) graduate students in California to pursue careers in marine and coastal science and/or policy;
  2. Increase available expertise and capacity at partnering agencies and organizations in California relevant to use, management, and conservation of coastal and marine resources;
  3. Foster closer relationships between academic scientists, Sea Grant and participating natural resource agencies, and other host organizations;
  4. Provide real-world experience to students to accelerate their career development; and
  5. Expand the diversity and representation of coastal and marine professionals in California to mimic the population of California with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.

This position is critical in leveraging various fellowship programs to nurture and strengthen fellows, mentors and hosts’ connection to other CASG assets that will help prioritize the program’s investments in research, communications and extension.

The Fellowship Program Coordinator also coordinates the review of annual and final reports submitted by funded students, fellows and researchers and helps to identify and follow up on noteworthy accomplishments and impacts to communicate to funding agency partners. This component of the job involves interaction with funded scientists, California Sea Grant’s Communications team and other Extension Specialists, and agency partners.

California Sea Grant is committed to increasing the diversity of the Sea Grant workforce and of the communities we serve. The State Fellowship Program is a flagship program of CASG and as such, its commitment to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion and access is a priority. The position is expected to reinforce this commitment through the development and implementation of several targeted approaches and strategic actions.
