California Sea Grant (CASG) is hiring a Digital Science Communications Specialist to develop and implement targeted communications and marketing strategies to highlight its programming in research, education and outreach.
CASG’s communications team promotes the work of our extension specialists, funded researchers and partner agencies, through written, visual and digital communications. Reporting to the Director, the Digital Communications Specialist will collaborate with members of the communications team and CASG leadership to develop a plan for these communications across platforms and will set project milestones and track the plan’s success. High-quality, high-volume work under deadline will be consistently required.
Key tasks include
- Collaboration with leadership, subject matter experts, the Communications team, and contractors to identify, plan and implement communication strategies across multiple platforms, including websites, social media, email campaigns and YouTube.
- Layout, design and production of a variety of marketing materials — including newsletters, slide decks, infographics, brochures, graphics and videos — and websites that meet best practices for search engine optimization.
- Identification, prioritization and production of news stories and press releases that showcase CASG’s research, extension, outreach and education activities, and the completion of regular audits to ensure that website content remains functional and up to date.
- Development and submission of progress reports, summary reports and technical reports as required by partner and funding agencies.
- Coordination and editorial oversight of the work of part-time science writers and communications fellows and interns.
Required knowledge and skills:
- Strong creativity skills, including knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience.
- Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated experience conducting interviews, writing stories, and arranging photography, videos and graphics to accompany news articles.
- Demonstrated ability to read and analyze technical and scientific content and translate these subjects into content that is accessible and engaging for a general audience.
- Demonstrated project coordination experience, including an ability to set timeframes and meet deadlines while managing several projects.
- Strong experience creating electronic and print-based newsletters, and thorough knowledge of maintaining and updating email lists.
- Experience in HTML and PHP and knowledge of software, including Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and content management systems.
- Experience using Google Analytics to track website traffic and demonstrated results using social media tactics to attract engagement.
Occasional non-standard hours will be required to meet deadlines. The Digital Communications Specialist may be required to travel and attend occasional weekend and evening events. Confidentiality is a condition of employment due to access to sensitive materials found in proposals, and the job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance of a background check.
This position can be hybrid or primarily remote.
