Increasing diversity in science through community science and stewardship

College and K-8 students monitoring restoration plantings

There is mounting interest in citizen science as an avenue for increasing scientific engagement and literacy but understanding how to effectively engage groups underrepresented in STEM fields in these projects remains a challenge.

With local partners, such as Ocean Discovery Institute, San Diego Canyonlands and San Diego Unified School District, we seek to better understand and overcome barriers, and increase inclusivity in science. We know that anyone can be a scientist, as long as there is curiosity, opportunity, and empowerment through the creation of a sense of belonging and a science identity.
