Research & Teaching
Dr. Richmond is an environmental social scientist whose work focuses on the human and policy dimensions of marine and coastal issues. Her research often incorporates interviews, focus groups, workshops, or survey approaches, and is often conducted with local partners with the goal of developing more just, equitable, and inclusive approaches to environmental concerns. Her expertise includes sea-level rise and coastal resilience, fishing community health, marine protected areas, offshore wind, and marine resource management/governance. She oversees graduate students and involves undergraduates in her research and engagement activities. Richmond teaches courses related to marine and coastal planning, environmental regulation, and senior planning capstone experiences.
Extension and Outreach
In her role as an extension specialist, Dr. Richmond helps to connect communities, Tribes, and local governments in the North Coast region with resources, information, and partnerships to help them address marine and coastal issues of concern to them. She is the co-chair of the Cal Poly Humboldt Sea Level-Rise Institute which is a network of academic, Tribal, community, and government representatives focused on sea-level rise in the North Coast region, specifically on Wigi (also known as Humboldt Bay) which is experiencing the fastest rate of relative sea-level rise on the West Coast. Richmond is also part of the Ocean Protection Council Science Advisory Team and the CSU COAST Executive Committee.
