Addressing Impediments to Aquaculture Opportunities

This Federal Funding Opportunity's program objective is focused on answering key questions impeding the development and expansion of sustainable United States marine, coastal, and Great Lakes aquaculture. This can be accomplished with research, education, technology transfer, and/or extension. Successful applications must outline small scale projects, business plans, workshops, etc. that seek to address key questions, barriers, or hurdles impeding the advancement of new or developing aquaculture initiatives that will contribute to the continuing growth of United States aquaculture production.

“Addressing Impediments to Aquaculture Opportunities” is one of two competitive funding opportunities in the 2017 Sea Grant Aquaculture Initiative.

Depending on appropriations, NOAA Sea Grant expects to have available a total of $3,000,000 between fiscal years 2017 and 2018 for a national initiative focused on answering key questions impeding the development and expansion of sustainable United States marine, coastal, and Great Lakes aquaculture. Successful applications must outline small scale projects, business plans, workshops, etc. that seek to address key questions, barriers, or hurdles impeding the advancement of new or developing aquaculture initiatives that will contribute to the continuing growth of United States aquaculture production.

Addressing Impediments to Aquaculture Opportunities: This Federal Funding Opportunity includes information needed for applications requesting up to $150,000 in total federal funding for a six-month to two-year period. Non-Federal matching funds of at least 50% are required. Awards are anticipated to start no later than September 1, 2017. Additional applications from this competition may be selected for funding in fiscal year 2018.

IMPORTANT DATES

March 21, 2017:
Approval to submit a proposal (see below) must be obtained from the California Sea Grant Director (Jim Eckman, jeckman@ucsd.edu) by 5:00 pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, March 21, 2017

April 6, 2017:
Final proposals are due to California Sea Grant by 5:00 pm Pacific Time on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Instructions on how to submit will be communicated to approved proposers after the March 21 deadline for obtaining approval to submit.

April 18, 2017:
Applications are due from Sea Grant Programs to Grants.gov no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, April 18, 2017.

It is up to prospective applicants to contact California Sea Grant and obtain approval to proceed with a proposal.  Approval to proceed will be conditional upon inclusion of a member of our team of California Sea Grant Extension Specialists as a meaningful partner in a proposed project.  Therefore, prospective applicants should contact the Sea Grant Extension Director, Lisa Schiavinato (lschiavinato@ucsd.edu; 858-822-2708) or potentially interested extension specialists to search for their interest in the proposed project, and willingness to serve in a meaningful role in the project.

It is the responsibility of the Sea Grant Director (Jim Eckman, jeckman@ucsd.edu) to determine if a prospective proposal idea will be approved for submission. He will make this decision based on input obtained from an extension specialist named in the project.
